'So-called' science cannot prove the Bible

I believe in evolution and creation.  Why is that a problem?

(This is continued from last week.  I will also have to address this at least once more next week in order to answer this question sufficiently.)

First of all, and I want to be very clear about this: believing in evolution does not mean that you are not saved.  This is not an issue of salvation.  Please do not misunderstand me there.

Christians, however, have yielded territory to evolution without cause!  Science know nothing; science proves nothing that contradicts a special, supernatural creation.  Too many Christians and theologians agree with evolution because they have been intimidated by “so-called science” and believe that “cutting and pasting” evolution into the Bible is a way of surrendering the debate with dignity.

We do not have to do this.  Charles Spurgeon was a great preacher who lived and preached right in the middle of this debate in England where Charles Darwin was being honored as a hero of science.  He put it best when he said in The Sword and the Trowel, “We are invited, brethren, most earnestly to go away from the old-fashioned belief of our forefathers because of the supposed discoveries of science.  What is science?  The method by which man tries to conceal his ignorance.  It should not be so, but so it is.  You are not to be dogmatic in theology my brethren, it is wicked; but for scientific men it is the correct thing.  You are never to assert anything very strongly; but scientists may boldly assert what they cannot prove, and may demand a faith far more credulous than any we possess.”

The double standard the Darwinists of the day held was obvious to Spurgeon.  He recognized the dogmatic way science presented itself and was willing to stand against it.  Ken Ham points out that “It’s not a matter of being dogmatic, but rather which dogma is the best dogma with which to be dogmatized.”  If we cower down to “so-called” scientific men and twist their supposed evidence we allow the very foundation of our faith to be destroyed.

For me personally, this debate about evolution and creation is not the issue.  I am not good at debate.  The issue for me that is at stake is the authority of the Word of God.  That is worth fighting for; it is worth standing against a scientific establishment that has allowed evolution to masquerade under the “impartial” banner of science.

We are called in 1 Peter 3:15 to defend the hope that is in us.  Evolution attacks the Bible in its very first verse.  Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”  Either you believe it, or you don’t!  It’s as simple as that.  If you choose to call that poetry in order to accommodate evolution than you have turned the Scripture into something that it is not.  I will address the poetry claim later.

Why do we live in a society with such wishy-washy, watered-down religion?  Because we have lost our absolutes in the very first verse of the Bible.  If we can’t trust the Word of God in Genesis 1:1 then why should we trust it in John 3:16.

Spurgeon goes on to identify this attack on God’s Word and says, “Forsooth, you and I are to take our Bibles and shape and mould our belief according to the ever-shifting teachings of so-called scientific men.  What folly is this!  Why, the march of science, falsely so-called through the world may be traced by exploded fallacies and abandoned theories.  Former explores once adored are now ridiculed; the continual wreckings of false hypothesis is a matter of universal notoriety.  You may tell where the learned have encamped by the debris left behind of suppositions and theories as plentiful as broken bottles.”

There is indeed a problem accepting evolution.  It casts doubt on the Word of God.  In Genesis 3:1 Satan casts doubt on what God had said and in verse five calls God a liar.  Eve was deceived because Satan didn’t blatantly call God a liar but cast doubt on His Word.

Therefore, we need to be careful that, in the same way, we are not deceived by doctrines like evolution that casts doubt on God’s Word; teachings that subtly call God a liar by their “so-called” science.
